Pete Hoekstra Super Bowl campaign

U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra faces heat after airing a 30 second campaign commerical during the Super Bowl last Sunday. Pete is running for a seat in congress against the Michigan incumbent Debbie Stabenow. The adverstisement upsets the sentiments of many in the country. Pete Hoeskstra stereo type for the Asians is evident as his ad portrays images of a young Asian girl accusing his opponent of heavy spending in broken English. Filmed in California, the ad is makes viewers believe its China. With the sounds of the gong and the young girl riding a bike, it is pretty convincing. The girl stops her bike to say this to the camera “Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow. Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow."

The nonpartisan Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group's Michigan chapter said it was "deeply disappointed" by the ad, noting that the Asian-American community is a major contributor to Michigan's economy. In 2010, Michigan's 236,490 Asian-Americans made up 2.4 percent of the state's population, up 35 percent from 2000."It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra's campaign chose to use harmful negative stereotypes that intrinsically encourage anti-Asian sentiment," the group said in a statement.

Pete Hoeskstra spent $75,000 for the Super Bowl ad buy.
