Banana fibre in Bihar: The remarkable story of an industry and an entrepreneur

in Blog

Patna: Bihar farmers plant banana in around 28,000 hectares of land every year. The banana plant is the largest herbaceous flowering plant. The plants are normally tall and fairly sturdy and are often mistaken for trees, but their main or upright stem is actually a pseudostem that grows 6 to 7.6 metres (20 to 24.9 ft) tall, growing from a corm.

Each pseudostem can produce a single bunch of bananas. After fruiting, the pseudostem dies, but offshoots may develop from the base of the plant. Many varieties of bananas are perennial. The relevant point here however is, the stem invariably goes waste. On the whole 22 districts in Bihar grow banana, some of them on a vast scale. Each acre of banana plantation may have up to 1300 tress. This may give you some idea of the banana waste output of entire Bihar. So what should be done?

DETROIT (AP) — President Barack Obama said Monday that congressional Republicans must put their country ahead of their party and vote to create new jobs as he used a boisterous Labor Day rally to aim a partisan barb at the GOP.

In a preview of the jobs speech he will deliver on Thursday to Congress, Obama said there are numerous roads and bridges that need rebuilding in the U.S., and over 1 million unemployed construction workers who are available to build them.

He said that with widespread suffering, “the time for Washington games is over” and lawmakers must move quickly to create jobs.

In Detroit stop President Obama: I will stand up for collective bargaining - Freep Article

in Detroit, Blog

In perhaps some of his strongest words of support for organized labor, President Barack Obama told a riverfront crowd of thousands in Detroit today that “As long as I’m in the White House, I’m going to stand up for collective bargaining.”

He said organized labor is responsible for the rise of the middle class and the core of the nation’s economy and that legislative battles to curb the rights of organized labor is a threat to the nation as a whole.

“When I hear they’re trying to take collective bargaining away, trying to pass right to work laws, I know it’s not about economics it’s about politics,” he said, prompting a chant from the crowd of “Four more years.”

Hartalika Teej - By: Gyan Rajhans

Hartalika Teej - Wednesday, August 30th
Tomorrow many Hindu women will be celebrating Haritalika Teej and keeping strict fast without taking a drop of water to please the Goddess for longevity of their married life. One of them has asked me to write about this fast and festival, hence this blog.

Hartalika Teej is the biggest of the various variation of Teej. Hartalika Teej falls on the third day of the first fortnight of the month of Bhadra in Hindu Calendar. By rigorous fasting and praying to Goddess Parvati on Hartalika Teej, married women are blessed with healthy life of their husband while the unmarried girls are said to be blessed by a husband like Lord Shiva. This year Hartalika Teej Vrat (fast) is on August 31. Some Hindu calendars have also marked it on September 1.

From soldier to savior: India's Hazare another Gandhi? - CNN article by Kevin Voigt

in Blog

(CNN) -- He wears only khadi, a simple garb of homespun cotton, and lives in a small room off a temple in a remote, drought-prone western Indian village. A veteran of the 1965 India-Pakistan war, he retired from the Indian army and took vows of chastity and public service.

According to public statements in June, the septuagenarian bachelor has $1,500 in his bank account.
But ascetic social activist Anna Hazare has galvanized the nation of India, rattling the country's leadership at the highest levels, as he garners support that cuts across economic and social divides.
His grassroots effort to fight corruption through public fasting has drawn comparisons to Mohandas Gandhi, whose non-violent efforts helped lead to India's independence from British rule in 1947.

Blighted Indian state of Bihar transforms its image reports 'The National'

in Blog

For many decades, Bihar was the quintessence of all that is woeful about India.

The eastern state was rife with endemic corruption, anarchic crime and a depressed economy. The state was damned by the country's highest child mortality and lowest literacy rate. Kidnapping for ransom was its only growing industry. Travelling to the countryside after sundown elicited dire warnings: you could get waylaid by highway bandits notorious for making you che inch chota, a colloquial Hindi expression meaning shorter by six inches from the neck - as a result of bring decapitated. Amid the growing lawlessness, factoriesclosed and investors fled. Impoverished Bihari migrants, the unwanted flotsam of its sinking economy, were frequently beaten up for swamping other states and "stealing" jobs from locals.

I was quite busy on twitter reading and replying messages.

Ramdev VS Anna Hazare – Unmatched Questions by Priyankan Goswami, published in the Times of Assam on May 26th provides an interesting perspective on the anti- corruption movement that made millions of Indians stand up against the unfair, corrupt practices running rampant amongst the Indian Government officials. Leader Anna Hazare went on a four day fast to voice his disapprovement and rallied the common man to protest and demanded a corruption free state. The anti- corruption frenzy forced the government to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill,(Citizen's Ombudsman Bill) a draft anti-corruption bill drawn up by prominent civil society activists seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases. A landmark move towards a big change!

Baba Ramdev's "Satyagraha" - protest against corruption halted by the Indian Government

in Blog

June 5th: Democracy was attacked when the Indian Government gave orders to halt Baba Ramdev's crusade against black money and corruption with a police raid in the middle of the night in New Delhi, India. To disperse the protesters, many elderly and ladies were charged with sticks and tear gas. Baba Ramdev was removed forcebly from the Ramlila grounds and escorted back to Haridwar after an all night detention in the police custody. People's democratic right to protest and raise voice against the government they elected, has been crushed - stomped upon.
What was intended to be a peaceful protest with a day of fast took an ugly turn, because the reigning government decided it was too risky - risky for THEM!
