Google India: India not a totalitarian regime like China

in Blog

NEW DELHI: Google India, which along with 20 websites is facing criminal case for allegedly hosting objectionable materials, told the Delhi High Court that blocking them was not an option as a democratic India does not have a "totalitarian" regime like China. "The issue relates to a constitutional issue of freedom of speech and expression and suppressing it was not possible as the right to freedom of speech in democratic India separates us from a totalitarian regime like China," advocate N K Kaul, appearing for Google India, told Justice Suresh Kait. In an earlier event the Indian Government had given sanction for the prosecution of 21 social networking sites like Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo India in the ongoing spat between the companies and the Government of India over content regulation.

Uproar over ad mocking Presidential hopeful John Huntsman’s adopted Indian, Chinese daughters

in Blog
See video

New York: In presidential elections, family matters, and the 2012 Republican contest is getting weirdly twisted about dark horse presidential candidate Jon Huntsman’s harmless adopted daughters. There is a big fight going on about who posted an obnoxious web video called “Jon Huntsman’s Values” mocking first Huntsman’s service as US ambassador to China, then the fact that he adopted a child in China and India.

Naturally, Huntsman was furious when a group that claims to support Ron Paul, called “NHLiberty4Paul” posted a provocative video involving Huntsman’s adopted daughters on YouTube.

“Share our values? A man of faith?” the ad asks, as a photograph appears of Huntsman carrying an infant, Asha Bharati. A beaming father and daughter are seen with red tikkas on their foreheads. The picture was taken shortly after the Huntsmans adopted Asha, now 6, from Gujarat in 2006.

Bajaj launches India's latest ultra-low-cost car RE60

in Blog

Bajaj Auto unveiled India's latest ultra-low-cost car on Tuesday, a 200cc four-seater that looks set to compete with the Tata Nano for the title of the world's cheapest auto. The group gave no price for the low-emission vehicle which will have a top speed of 70 kilometres an hour (43 miles an hour), but the build quality indicated it was pitched firmly at the bottom of the market. The "RE60" is the first foray into the passenger car market by Bajaj, a motorbike and rickshaw specialist which entered into an ultimately aborted alliance with Nissan and Renault in 2009 to develop the vehicle. Group managing director Rajiv Bajaj said the core market for the RE60 would be owners of three-wheeled motorised rickshaws who wanted to upgrade to four wheels, but it was also for anyone who "wanted to take it home."

Bihar – 2011 Year in Review by Ajit Chouhan

in Ann Arbor, Blog

Year 2011 will go down as a landmark year for Bihar. Having turned the wheels of development and progress in the last few years, 2011 saw consolidation of various initiatives and remarkable turnaround in the state. In 2010, Bihar emerged as a role model for electoral democracy when people unanimously voted for progress and prosperity, weeding out the shibboleths of vote bank politics.

Time magazine recently had an article on Bihar on “How Nitish Kumar Turned Bihar into a Model of Indian Reform”.Though the rest of the country saw challenges growth numbers dwindling due to slower reforms and lack of decision making, Bihar is on fast track growth track.

3)"Even if a snake is not poisonous, it should pretend to be venomous."

4)"There is some self-interest behind every friendship. There is no friendship without self-interests. This is a bitter truth."

Volunteering - A Great Way To Learn Real Executive Leadership: Forbes

in Blog

Another reason to volunteer- making a difference in the lives of the needy.A Forbes article by Karl Moore
One of the most powerful ways for younger managers to understand and experience the type of leadership needed for the C-Suite is to do volunteer work early in their careers. This is because the type of leadership at the top is akin to being a leader of volunteers, it is not about carrots and sticks but about persuasion and getting people to grasp and follow your vision.

It’s an irony of modern corporate life, but one of the greatest challenges in motivating employees to sustain strong business performance is to make them feel like there’s a larger purpose to their lives than just meeting financial goals and this need is only getting strong with the younger generation, the Postmoderns. Although business success and the raises, bonuses, and perks that come with it are intrinsic motivators, money and corporate extras aren’t everything for most people.

New Blog on changing Bihar by Aditi Phadnis: From Bimaru to Booming?

in Blog

All may not be hunky-dory in Bihar, but its CM and people deserve full marks for trying
Aditi Phadnis / New Delhi December 24, 2011
A recent visit to Patna reinforced this impression: it is the most happening city in India. True, it is still dirty and unplanned. Traffic pretty much does as it likes. There is no sense of civic responsibility or ownership.

All this is exasperating because Patna is where you can reach out and touch change. A Miss Bihar contest is to be held in early 2012, revived since 2008. Before that, the last one was held in the 1970s. There were one or two in between but they lost credibility when the Miss Bihar title-holder turned out to be from Allahabad, and (oh no!) married! In 2008, the contest sank without a trace after some contestants alleged that the competition was rigged, stormed the stage, seized the microphone and started shouting slogans, alleging that the organisers had taken bribes to manipulate results.

Ancient Vishnu idol found in a Russian town

in Blog

MOSCOW: An ancient Vishnu idol has been found during excavation in an old village in Russia's Volga region, raising questions about the prevalent view on the origin of ancient Russia.

The idol found in Staraya (old) Maina village dates back to VII-X century AD. Staraya Maina village in Ulyanovsk region was a highly populated city 1700 years ago, much older than Kiev, so far believed to be the mother of all Russian cities.

"We may consider it incredible, but we have ground to assert that Middle-Volga region was the original land of Ancient Rus. This is a hypothesis, but a hypothesis, which requires thorough research," Reader of Ulyanovsk State University's archaeology department Dr Alexander Kozhevin told state-run television Vesti

Reserve Bank of India defends the sinking Rupee

in Blog

The Reserve Bank of India stepped in to defend its battered currency, which sank to a record low on Thursday, by selling dollars in the market and reducing trading limits for banks. The two-pronged defence came after the currency hit a series of record lows, with investors and officials piling pressure on the central bank to abandon its hands-off approach to the rupee, which ended off an all-time low hit low earlier in the day.
The rupee has lost more than 18 percent from a July peak, making it the worst performer in Asia. Weakening economic conditions are expected to keep the rupee under pressure in the near-term, given the central bank's limited means and appetite to prop up the currency. The RBI sold dollars, according to traders, sparking what they said was a slew of stop-losses on long dollar positions by market players who had expected the currency, which had plunged to a record low of 54.30 against the dollar, to hit 55 per dollar.
